Workshop Session Descriptions |
ETHICS Ethics Session #1: Lynn Bohecker, PhD, LMFT - Integrating Spirituality Ethically in the Counseling Relationship Ethics Session #2: Stephanie Sternes, LMFT, LCPC, NCC - Ethically Approaching Stepfamilies with Differing Value Systems Countertransference can be common in the counseling relationship when a counselor has not been trained in complex family systems. In part because there is no standard by which these families come together and there are many value and belief mixes about how they best work. This leaves the untrained therapist vulnerable to relying on their own experience of complex families. This presentation will address ethical issues such as countertransference to foster awareness for the therapist and to prevent it from interfering with therapy. | SUICIDE PREVENTION Suicide Prevention Session #1: Stephen Ammann, LCSW, CSAT - The Relationship between Trauma and Suicide - Creating Meaningful Coping Skills Trauma and PTSD can lead to a higher risk of suicide. Research shows people with a history of trauma and PTSD have a higher risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and suicide. This presentation will examine links between complex trauma and suicidal ideation, examining closely what both are and how to help someone create effective and meaningful coping mechanisms. Suicide Prevention Session #2: Hailey Martinez, PhD, LCPC, ACS - Suicide Prevention and Intervention | BOUNDARIES Boundaries Session #1: Stephanie Alvarez, LMFT, LPC, NCC - Boundaries in Marriage and Family Therapy Healthy boundaries are the emotional, physical, and psychological limits we set in our relationships to protect our well-being and maintain a sense of self. These boundaries are vital for creating an environment where each family member can thrive while respecting each other's individuality. This presentation will explore boundary setting as an essential part of self care and maintaining happy, healthy, and whole relationships. They’re a way of showing others the limits of what we can take and accept from them. Boundaries Session #2: Stephanie Sternes, LMFT, LCPC, NCC - Boundaries in Specialty Work: Navigating Competency in Divorce, Stepfamily, and Foster Care Systems There are over 67 different types of non-traditional family systems today. 42% of adults (102 million) have a step-relationship (either a step-parent, a step- or half- sibling, or a step-child). When you add the 11.6 million stepchildren in the US (16% of all kids), the total is an estimated 113.6 million Americans that have a step-relationship. 75% of step-families express frustration that they do not have access to trained professionals when they need help. This presentation will discuss common boundary challenges and therapeutic ways to overcome. |
